A building uses bricks which have to be brought from far away distances – usually rural areas. This results in exploitation of a distant resource, air pollution and transportation wastage.
At Biome, we make bricks on site by using the mud which is excavated during foundation building. Further several houses have basements which apart from acting as a cool space give additional mud for building the home.
All our houses have Rainwater Harvesting thus reducing dependence upon the grid for supplying water. We also experiment extensively with waste water treatment and re-use.
“Filler slabs” have had computer keyboards put in them thus reducing demand for cement(Malathi and Professor). In building foundations we use plastic bags thus making them effective “waste sinks”.
